When severe weather (freezing/ice, rain/flood, snow, etc) is predicted, administrators including the Director of Transportation and the Superintendent, travel bus routes in the district beginning around 4:00 am. Area Superintendents consult with each other and with the police department to make an informed and safe decision.
Should the Superintendent determine the conditions are unsafe for bus travel, and warrant cancellation of classes, we contact area media between 5:00 and 5:30 am and post notifications on our website, Facebook and Mobile App. The mobile app is the best way to receive emergency notifications. Simply download the app for free in the Apple App or Google Play store by searching “Kerrville ISD.” In the app, click on "notifications" and then follow the schools you want to receive messages from. Also check your mobile device/phone settings to allow the app to send you push notifications.
If school is cancelled you will receive an automatic “push” message (similar to a text) notifying you of the closure. If you do not receive a push message, and do not see a school cancellation on our website or Facebook by 6:15 am, it is safe to assume schools are open on the normal schedule. We encourage parents to listen to the local radio and San Antonio television stations rather than call the campuses, in order to keep the lines open for emergency communications.
KISD as a general rule does NOT delay classes (except for high water situations where water will dissipate in a few hours). The reason for this is that it places an undue hardship on working parents to find care for their child if they still have to work. Also, cold/icy weather conditions often deteriorate as a day progresses, which could mean we have no way to safely transport students home at the end of the day. For these reasons, we take very seriously the decision to cancel school, and only do so if it is deemed absolutely necessary for the safety of all involved, as that is our highest priority.
Often there are sports and extra-curricular activities scheduled during times of bad weather. Coaches and principals consult with the Superintendent and the opposing school district to make a decision about an event. A schedule showing all delay of games or cancellations will be posted on the website and Facebook as soon as it is available. Please keep in close contact with your coaches and do not travel if it is unsafe.
